PM Modi shares article highlighting India’s rapidly evolving deep-tech capabilities

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday shared an article by Sridhar Vembu, Chief Scientist at Zoho, highlighting India’s rapidly evolving deep-tech capabilities.

A post shared by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on X said, “Chief Scientist of Zoho, Shri Sridhar Vembu writes that India’s rapidly evolving deep-tech capability owes much to PM Narendra Modi’s vision and commitment. He highlights how semiconductors, space, defence and AI are building capabilities and know-how, saying India is now choosing to do more of the difficult learning itself.”

In his article, Vembu said that national technological capability develops through sustained efforts, experimentation and the accumulation of skills and know-how. He said self-reliance should mean the ability to invent, engineer and improve technologies while continuing to engage with global markets.

Highlighting the semiconductor sector, Vembu cited the ₹91,000-crore Tata Electronics semiconductor fab at Dholera, designed for 50,000 wafer starts per month across mature process nodes. He said the facility would also create capabilities across equipment, materials, testing, engineering and supply chains.

He noted that 12 semiconductor projects had been approved across six states by May 2026, involving around ₹1.65 lakh crore in committed investment, with the Semicon India Programme providing fiscal support of up to 50 per cent of capital expenditure.

Vembu also cited growth in electronics production from ₹1.9 lakh crore in FY15 to ₹13.11 lakh crore in FY26, while electronics exports increased from ₹38,000 crore to ₹4.24 lakh crore.

He highlighted developments in private space ventures, defence manufacturing and exports, the ₹10,371.92-crore IndiaAI Mission, and the Anusandhan National Research Foundation.

Vembu concluded that India was increasingly choosing to undertake advanced technological learning domestically rather than relying primarily on imported capabilities.
