According to the updates shared by his son in February 2026, Lou was placed under hospice care for a better quality of life under doctors when he was fighting for his life. His son, Evan Holtz, explained that their family was focusing on his father’s comfort while he was at his home in Orlando. In his words:

“The Holtz family… shares the difficult news that our father, Coach Lou Holtz, is presently facing a health challenge. While this is a challenging time, our focus is on maintaining his comfort, quality of life, and care in his Orlando home.”
