Kolkata: West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose received a threatening email warning to “blast” him on Thursday (January 8) night, amid escalating tensions between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) as state assembly elections approach. A man was arrested in connection to the threats and security for the Governor increased.
According to the Governor’s office, security for Kolkata Lok Bhavan was increased after he received an email stating that the sender “Will blast him”, PTI quoted a senior official.
Along with the death threat, the accused also mentioned his phone number in the email.

Police on Friday arrested a man from Salt Lake near Kolkata for allegedly sending the threatening email to the Governor, officials from Lok Bhavan said.
Preliminary investigation into the case revealed that the accused had sent Bose threatening messages through email and via WhatsApp to the Lok Bhavan official phone number, the Times of India reported.
The accused is currently under interrogation for their involvement in the incident.
A detailed report on the incident has been sent to the Union Home Ministry.
Security Amped up for Governor
“The accused also mentioned his mobile number in the email. We have informed the DGP and asked him to arrest the person immediately,” the official said.
The Governor’s office confirmed that security for the Governor has been accused since the email was received. The matter was also immediately reported to the Union Home Ministry due to its seriousness.
Bose, who is provided with Z-plus category security cover now has state police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) working together to ensure his safety.
The CRPF deployed around 60 to 70 police personnel for his protection, the agency reported.
Following the threat, a meeting of senior security officials responsible for the Governor’s protection was held to assess the situation and strengthen existing measures.
This was not the first death threat the Governor received, ANI reported. Multiple other messages of a similar nature were sent to Bose.

BJP Blasts CM Banerjee for Law and Order Collapse
Responding to news of the incident, BJP leader Amit Malviya took to X to attack Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the law and order situation in the state which is soon to hold state assembly elections.
“Welcome to Mamata Banerjee’s regime, where even the Governor is not safe. Law and order has completely collapsed in West Bengal,” he said in his post.
In a separate post, he accused Banerjee of obstructing ED’s raids on Thursday.
“The Home Minister, Mamata Banerjee, is busy snatching incriminating files from the ED in order to protect a private firm accused of coal smuggling and money laundering. Mamata Banerjee is an unmitigated disaster,” he added.
Amid the escalating tensions between the BJP and TMC, Banerjee is going to lead a protest in Kolkata on January 9 against the ED raids, as West Bengal gears up for elections in the first half of this year.
