Mumbai: India’s semi-high-speed rail journey is set to enter a new phase, with the next-generation Vande Bharat Express 4.0 expected to be launched on the Ahmedabad–Mumbai route in 2027. The Ministry of Railways has announced that the upgraded version will come with the latest technology, marking what officials describe as a major step forward in modernising passenger train travel in India.
The new train is also expected to operate on the corridor being upgraded as part of the Ahmedabad–Mumbai bullet train route, where infrastructure improvements are underway to support faster and safer movement of high-speed trains.
What Makes Vande Bharat 4.0 special?
Vande Bharat version 4.0 is being positioned as a major leap in Indian Railways’ high-speed ambitions, with reports suggesting it could become India’s fastest train once rolled out.
Unlike earlier versions of Vande Bharat which operate at semi-high-speed limits on most routes, the 4.0 upgrade is being developed with future high-speed corridors in mind.
Ahmedabad–Mumbai Bullet Train Route to Get the First Service
According to media reports, the first Vande Bharat 4.0 service will operate on the Ahmedabad–Mumbai corridor, which is currently being upgraded with advanced railway technology.
The upgraded infrastructure is expected to play a critical role in enabling high-speed operations and ensuring safe movement of faster trains — a key requirement for introducing next-generation services.
Vande Bharat Express 4.0 Top Speed: Up to 250 kmph
One of the biggest highlights of the new Vande Bharat 4.0 is its speed.
Reports suggest the train is planned to run at speeds of up to 250 kmph on Indian tracks — which would be a first for the network.
At the same time, the train’s design reportedly allows room for future upgrades, with the capability to eventually operate on corridors that can support speeds of up to 350 kmph. However, initial operations are expected to begin at lower speeds, depending on route readiness and technical clearance.
Improved Security: Advanced KAVACH 5.0 Safety System
Safety will also be a core focus of the upcoming upgrade.
Experts quoted in reports indicate that Vande Bharat 4.0 will follow improved quality standards and will be equipped with the advanced KAVACH 5.0 safety system, aimed at strengthening train protection and reducing accident risks on high-speed routes.
For passengers, the move signals more than just faster travel — it reflects Indian Railways’ wider shift towards technology-led, high-speed rail connectivity.
