The Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru is known not only for its high-class services, but also for rumours of a ‘ghost’ wandering on the campus. The talk of a spirit first emerged in 2008 and was later expanded into multiple versions and stories. The story even included a picture of a female ghost, which circulated widely on mobile phones.
According to Bangalore Mirror, the pilot had spotted a girl sitting in the middle of the runway, which forced the aircraft to remain grounded. The story gained new twists when someone added that the police had picked up the girl after being alerted by air traffic control. Shockingly, she reportedly disappeared before reaching the terminal building.
The rumours grew further when staff recounted an earlier incident from two months ago, claiming they had seen an empty lift moving up and down on its own inside the airport. By evening, the ghost story had reached ticketing and catering staff coming in for the night shift. Many rushed to get a photograph of the girl, which turned out to be fake. Later, yet another story emerged, alleging that the airport had been built on a former burial ground and that the girl had been killed in a nearby forest.
The spread of these tales caused considerable anxiety among staff, prompting police officials and senior airline authorities to step in. They spent hours assuring employees that the airport was safe and debunking the rumours. Despite the panic and repeated stories, there is no evidence to support any of the claims. The authorities emphasised that the airport is fully secure and that flights and operations continue as usual.
While the ghost stories provided plenty of chatter, the staff is gradually returning to normal duties, though whispers of the incident may continue for some time.
