New Delhi: Two students from Northeast India were allegedly attacked by a group of hooligans near the Saket District Court Complex on Sunday evening. According to preliminary information, a girl and her friend were taking a walk when a group of men allegedly passed lewd and derogatory remarks at them.
When one of the girls allegedly objected to the comments, the situation escalated and she was reportedly assaulted with belts by the accused. The injured girl was taken to Safdarjung Hospital for medical examination and treatment.
Second Incident in Malviya Nagar
In a separate but similar incident reported shortly after in the Malviya Nagar area, another couple of girls from the Northeast were allegedly attacked following racial and derogatory remarks.
One of the victims sustained injuries and was also rushed to the hospital.
The incidents come just days after reports of racial slurs targeting students from Arunachal Pradesh in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, raising fresh concerns about the safety of people from the Northeast in the national capital.
Last month in February, in Malviya Nagar, three women from Arunachal Pradesh were allegedly subjected to racial slurs, humiliation, and intimidation by their neighbours in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar after a dispute over repair work at their rented flat. The neighbours reportedly used other derogatory terms targeting the northeastern community. The police said an FIR under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) pertaining to outraging a woman’s modesty and promoting enmity on grounds of religion, race, etc., has been registered against two people—Harsh Singh and his wife Ruby Jain. Both were later arrested by Delhi Police.

These events highlight ongoing concerns about safety for Northeast students in Delhi, particularly after recent reports of similar racial harassment. The police have registered a case against the accused from previous incidents, with further investigations underway.
