India’s Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has reassured students and parents that the Class 12 Mathematics board examination held on March 9, 2026, was secure, after concerns surfaced about a QR code printed on some question paper sets. The board issued an official clarification on March 10 through its social media account, posting a press release confirming that the question papers were genuine and that the security of the examination process remained uncompromised.
QR code raises concerns during exam
According to the statement shared by CBSE, question papers include multiple security features, including QR codes that can be scanned to verify the authenticity of the paper in case of a suspected breach.
However, during the Class 12 Mathematics examination conducted on March 9, it was observed that scanning one of the QR codes in a few question paper sets redirected users to a YouTube video. The unexpected result led to confusion among students and parents, with some questioning whether the examination paper had been compromised.
Shortly after the issue surfaced, the board released a press statement through its official X (formerly known as twitter) handle, attaching the press release document that clarified the situation.
CBSE issues official clarification
In the press release shared online, the board confirmed that the question papers were authentic and there was no security breach in the examination process.
“It is hereby confirmed by the Board that the question papers are genuine. The security of the question papers remains uncompromised,” the statement said.
The document was signed by Dr. Sanyam Bhardwaj, Controller of Examinations, who noted that while concerns had arisen due to the QR code redirection, the matter had been taken seriously and was being reviewed by the board.
A senior CBSE official said the board regularly reviews its security systems to maintain the credibility of national board examinations.
“QR codes are part of the verification mechanism included in the question papers,” the official said. “After examining the issue, the board has confirmed that the examination process remained secure.”
Examination security measures
CBSE conducts board examinations for millions of students across India every year, making it one of the largest standardized testing systems globally. To prevent paper leaks and ensure exam integrity, the board has introduced several layers of security in recent years.
