A first-year student at IIT Delhi was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room on Thursday (March 12). No suicide note was found, police said. The student’s father did not suspect any foul play. An FIR under Section 108 of the BNS (abetment of suicide) has been registered. Police have begun an investigation.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that the student lived with his mother in Vindhyachal Apartments on campus. She had left for her native place on March 10 and last spoke to him around 11 PM on March 11. When he did not answer calls the next morning, another resident alerted security. The room was opened with their help, and the student was found hanging.

According to police, a PCR call was received around 8.35 am at Kishangarh police station regarding the death of a student on campus. When a police team reached the spot, the boy was found hanging from a ceiling fan with the help of a stole and was declared dead by doctors at the IIT Delhi hospital. Amit Goel, DCP (Southwest), as quoted by a report by Indian Express said the family does not suspect any foul play. “The statement of the father has been recorded, who expressed no suspicion regarding any foul play. The body was sent to Safdarjung Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination and later handed over to the family,” he added.

In a statement, IIT Delhi said the institute expressed “deep sorrow over the tragic and untimely demise” of the student extended support to the bereaved family. “The Delhi Police are investigating the tragic incident… In this hour of grief, the institute stands with the bereaved family and is providing them all support,” it added.
