In a chilling crime, a hit-and-run in Bengaluru’s Kengeri claimed the life of a 50-year-old woman on Monday. What initially appeared to be a mysterious death soon took a dramatic turn after police launched an investigation, revealing it was a road accident, with the accused allegedly trying to cover up the crime to mislead authorities, according to a Times of India report.
Kempamma, a resident of Vinayakanagar in Kengeri, sustained severe head injuries after being hit by an autorickshaw on the Bengaluru road. However, the autorickshaw driver tried to cover up the crime to escape being caught.
What Auto Driver Did With The Woman?
The woman was hit by an auto on the Kengeri Satellite Town road and suffered severe injuries. The driver, scared, took her to a hospital, but after realising that she had died, he allegedly dumped her body in a garbage heap and fled the scene.
The vehicle hit Kempamma near a Domino’s Pizza outlet while the accused was ferrying two passengers to Kengeri railway station. The passengers left the scene since they were rushing to catch the train.
After the woman was hit, the eyewitnesses immediately called the ambulance service. However, they did not arrive on time, and the woman died. The driver took the help of bystanders and rushed her to a hospital, where staff allegedly refused to treat her due to a lack of facilities at the medical centre.
What Driver Confessed During?
Kengeri police have arrested 50-year-old autorickshaw driver Basavegowda, a resident of Laggere, after checking the CCTV analysis and reviewing eyewitness accounts.
During the interrogation, he confessed that Kempamma suddenly walked onto the road and, unable to control the auto, he hit her, which left her severely injured, TOI reported.
“We have taken him into police custody to reconstruct the crime and match the chain of events with evidence. The case will later be handed over to the traffic police,” said Deputy Commissioner of police (South-West) Anitha B Haddannavar, according to a TOI report.
