The Andhra Pradesh government has urged the Centre to extend additional financial support to successfully achieve the targets of the Jal Jeevan Mission, with Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan stating that the state remains fully committed to providing safe drinking water to every household. Speaking in connection with the Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 agreement between the Centre and the state, he highlighted the need for increased funding in view of the state’s current financial situation.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 was signed in New Delhi in the presence of Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil. The agreement was formalized between officials of the Ministry of Jal Shakti and senior representatives of the Andhra Pradesh government. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan participated in the event through video conference, reaffirming the state’s commitment to the ambitious drinking water programme.

Pawan Kalyan stated that the coalition government is determined to ensure that every village and every household in Andhra Pradesh receives piped drinking water by December 2028, in line with the targets set under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0. However, he pointed out that the current funding pattern is not sufficient to achieve full coverage. Even if all the funds already allocated by the Centre are utilized, around 13 lakh households may still remain outside the scope of the mission.
He also criticized the Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared during the previous government, describing it as unscientific and not aligned with the state’s long-term interests. According to him, the limitations in the DPR have made it difficult to meet the intended targets with the existing financial allocations.
Highlighting the scale of the challenge, Pawan Kalyan appealed to the Central government to sanction additional funds so that the mission can be implemented effectively and inclusively. He emphasized that providing clean drinking water to every household is not just a policy goal but a basic necessity that directly impacts public health and quality of life.
The Deputy Chief Minister expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister C.R. Patil, and Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu for their continued support toward the mission. He urged the Centre to consider the state’s request positively and ensure that Andhra Pradesh can achieve 100 percent coverage under Jal Jeevan Mission within the stipulated timeline.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Jal Shakti, including Secretary Ashok Meena and Director Kamal Kishore Soan, were also present at the event, along with other key officials. The Centre has advised the state to complete the implementation of piped drinking water connections to all households by December 2028, making it one of the most significant infrastructure and public welfare initiatives currently underway in the state.
