Kolkata: In a shocking incident in Kolkata, a man allegedly strangled his mother to death following an argument over her remarriage and fled with her jewellery, police said on Wednesday. The incident took place in the Baguihati area of North Kolkata. According to police, the accused, identified as Rudradeep, had come to stay with his mother, Ruma Chakraborty, at her rented flat near Kathpole in the Jagatpur area.
Ruma Chakraborty was living with her second husband, Ranjit Chakraborty, in a ground-floor apartment they had rented around six months ago. On Tuesday, her son from her first marriage arrived at the house.
Police said a heated argument broke out between the mother and son over her remarriage. The situation escalated into a physical confrontation.

In a fit of rage, the accused allegedly strangled his mother using a scarf. He then reportedly took her gold jewellery, locked the house from outside, and fled the spot.
Body Found By Husband
Ranjit Chakraborty returned home late at night and found the door locked from outside. When repeated calls to relatives yielded no information about his wife’s whereabouts, he contacted the landlord and accessed a spare key.
On entering the house, he found Ruma lying lifeless on the bed, with a scarf tightly wrapped around her neck. The police were immediately informed.
Investigation Underway
Officers from the Kolkata Police reached the spot and collected forensic evidence. The body was sent for post-mortem examination.
“The body was sent to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday morning for a post-mortem examination. The exact cause of death will be ascertained once the preliminary post-mortem report is received. A case has been registered based on the complaint lodged by the woman’s husband. A search is on for the woman’s son from her first marriage,” said a senior officer of Kolkata Police.
Police suspect that the accused may be a drug addict, based on inputs from local residents. Investigators are also probing whether the crime was linked only to the dispute over remarriage or if financial issues were involved.
Further investigation is ongoing.
