Intern at IT Firm in Chennai Dies, Another Missing After Waves Sweep Trio at Beach During Selfie Attempt

One of three youngsters from Maharashtra, working as interns with IT services firm Cognizant in Chennai, died while another remains missing after they were swept away by waves at Golden Beach while reportedly taking selfies during a beach visit. The three were part of a group of 26 students visiting the beach on Saturday (February 21). According to a report by The Indian Express, Mayuri Harishchandra Chaudhary(22), from Varthi village in Mohadi taluka, Bhandara district, died in the incident. Jai Patil (24), from Jamner in Jalgaon district, remains missing, while Raj Kedari from Pune was rescued and is stable.

According to reports, fifteen out of the 26 students were from Maharashtra and had travelled to the city for the internship at Cognizant’s Siruseri campus. Saturday being a holiday, the group had gone for an outing to the beach located along East Coast Road (Puducherry Road), only the three entered the sea when waves measuring nearly 10 to 15 feet surged unexpectedly. Before visiting the beach along East Coast Road, the group had stopped at the Matsya Narayana Temple, Tamil Nadu officials said as per Express report.

Police from Kanathur station launched search and rescue operations immediately. Mayuri was taken to Injambakkam Government Hospital, where she was declared dead, while Raj was rescued and treated. Search efforts for Jai continue with the Kovalam and Marina Fire and Rescue teams, fibre boats, and drones assisting. Local fishermen were alerted to help in the operation.

Families Receive Support, Search Continues

According to a post on X, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis spoke to the Tamil Nadu government and is monitoring the rescue efforts. He expressed condolences to Chaudhary’s family and urged authorities to expedite the search and extend necessary assistance.

Harishchandra Chaudhary, Mayuri’s father, said, “We are receiving all the necessary help in Chennai and the administration is in constant touch with us. Some of the students who were with Mayuri are also here. The government is assisting us in every possible way.”

Her brother Aniket added, “We first heard the news about Mayuri from one of her friends. Later, it was confirmed by a police officer from Kanathur, Chennai. That moment was extremely shocking — we could not accept it. We then informed our parents and began the process of deciding who would go there and what needed to be done next.”
