Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday addressed the Annual NCC PM Rally at the Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi, underlining the role of youth in nation-building and describing the National Cadet Corps (NCC) as a movement that shapes confident, disciplined and responsible citizens.
At the outset of his address, the Prime Minister expressed grief over a tragic plane crash in Maharashtra earlier in the day, which claimed the life of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and several others. “Ajit Dada made a significant contribution to the development of Maharashtra and the nation, especially in improving the lives of people in villages,” the Prime Minister said, expressing condolences to the bereaved families. He added that the nation stands in solidarity with the families of those who lost their lives in the accident.
Greeting NCC cadets from across the country and friendly foreign nations, the Prime Minister noted the growing participation of girl cadets and highlighted the expansion of NCC strength from 14 lakh to 20 lakh in recent years, with increased presence in border and coastal areas.
Describing NCC as a platform that connects youth with India’s heritage and values, the Prime Minister said the organisation instils pride in history and national heroes while nurturing a spirit of service. He cited initiatives such as cycle rallies, cultural festivals and expeditions that promote awareness of India’s legacy and unity.
Referring to India’s growing global engagement, the Prime Minister highlighted the recently concluded Free Trade Agreement with the European Union, calling it a “global gamechanger.” He said the agreement, covering 27 countries, will create opportunities in sectors such as research, education, IT, manufacturing and creative industries. “This agreement represents a ‘Freedom to Aspire’ for India’s youth,” he said.
The Prime Minister also pointed out that modern conflicts are no longer limited to conventional battlefields. “Today, battles are fought not only with weapons but also in code and in the cloud,” he said, adding that countries lagging in technology risk economic and security vulnerabilities. He emphasised the growing role of youth in defence innovation, startups, artificial intelligence and indigenous technology development.
Highlighting the importance of civic responsibility, the Prime Minister said that a developed India depends not only on economic progress but also on the conduct of citizens. He urged young people to actively participate in cleanliness drives, environmental initiatives and social campaigns, referring to programmes such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam.”
The Prime Minister also raised concerns over rising obesity among youth, urging disciplined lifestyles and reduced oil consumption. Stressing the importance of fitness, he said, “Yuva Fit Toh Desh Hit.”
Concluding his address, the Prime Minister expressed confidence in the capabilities of India’s youth and their role in shaping the country’s future. He said the values, skills and discipline cultivated through organisations like NCC will strengthen India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation.
