Delegates attending the Global Buddhist Summit (GBS) were offered a rare and deeply moving glimpse into India’s spiritual heritage and national ethos through a series of curated experiences, ranging from venerating sacred Buddhist relics to witnessing the Republic Day parade.
A key highlight of the summit was the visit of around 250 foreign monks and GBS delegates to the Qila Rai Pithora Cultural Complex, where they paid their respects and offered prayers to the Holy Relics of the Buddha. The exposition, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 3, 2026, drew delegates from India and abroad, who spent more than two hours immersed in the exhibition. Many were visibly moved by the historical narrative of the Piprahwa relics, including India’s efforts to repatriate the Buddha’s reliquaries taken away in 1898 and reunite them with the remaining fragments. Delegates lauded India’s commitment to preserving its ancient heritage and ensuring the return of sacred artefacts to their rightful home.
Several monks and nuns described the visit as a profoundly spiritual experience, with some chanting prayers in the serene atmosphere of the relic museum. “We are extremely fortunate to receive blessings from the relics of the Shakyamuni and witness such a rich collection,” said a senior Sangha member, while another delegate noted that the spiritual dimension of the summit came as an unexpected yet deeply fulfilling experience. Organisers said the visit was intentionally kept as a surprise to complement the academic and philosophical discussions of the summit with lived spiritual engagement.
Another significant moment came when around 60 monks from various countries attended the Republic Day parade on January 26. Their presence amid the grand display of India’s military capabilities and marching contingents created a powerful and reflective contrast, underscoring the coexistence of strength and serenity.
While India showcased its defence preparedness and democratic resolve, the presence of venerable monks and nuns symbolised peace and compassion, conveying a message that global challenges ultimately find resolution through the path of Dhamma, a theme often highlighted by the Prime Minister.
Calling the experience unforgettable, a senior monk described the parade as “thrilling”. In a memorable moment after the event, three nuns from Vietnam requested permission to remain briefly as Prime Minister Modi walked past their seating area. Assisted by staff of the International Buddhist Confederation, they were able to greet him and capture photographs to commemorate what one nun later described as a “once-in-a-lifetime experience”.
Together, the spiritual engagement at the relic exposition and the Republic Day experience reflected the dual essence of India’s identity — a civilisation deeply rooted in spiritual wisdom and cultural heritage, and a modern nation confidently asserting its democratic strength and sovereignty.
