Kolkata: A popular social media influencer was arrested on Thursday after his girlfriend accused him of forcibly detaining and molesting her, police said. The 22-year-old women filed a complaint of Wednesday against the influencer, who has around 32,000 followers on Facebook and about 1000 on Instagram. The accused has been identified as Shamik Adhikary, who goes by the online name “Nonsane”. According to police, Adhikary is resident of Behala in south Kolkata. The woman accused that, she was illegally confined at his house for over 20 hours and was physically assaulted and threatened during that period, according to a report.
What Happened So Far
According to reports, the woman visted Adhikary’s house on February 2, as she had friendship with the accused.
But in the complaint she alleged THAT he detained from around 9 pm that night to until nearly 5 pm next day
During this she claimed that he beat and punched her, touched her inappropriately and pulled her clothes.
She also alleged that he threatened her while they were arguing over an issue.
Following the incident, the woman approached Behala police station on Wednesday and submitted a written complaint. Based on her statement, police registered an FIR under Sections 127(2), 115(2), 74, and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The influencer was arrested on Thursday.
Police said the accused has a sizeable social media presence and is known for posting videos critical of the state government. He had also previously made reels highlighting issues related to women’s safety in West Bengal. The accused has not made any public statement so far.
BJP’s IT Cell Chief Amit Malviya Slams TMC Over Influencer’s Arrest
After news of the arrest surfaced, several social media users expressed outrage, with many of his followers condemning the alleged actions.
The arrest also triggered political reactions. BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya alleged that the influencer was being targeted and termed the action “political persecution”. In a long post on X, formerly Twitter, Malviya wrote, “West Bengal under Mamata Banerjee has turned into a dictatorial regime, where valid criticism is answered not with facts or reform, but with fake, malicious FIRs and fabricated cases. One after another, activists and voices who embarrass the Trinamool Congress are being targeted, subjected to relentless character assassination, intimidation, and police action.”
Referring to previous cases, he added, “First it was Sayak. The entire Trinamool ecosystem descended on him, branding him hateful, vilifying him publicly, and ensuring an FIR was lodged against him. That FIR still stands, not withdrawn, not resolved, hanging like a sword to silence dissent.”

Malviya further wrote, “Now it is Nonsane, seen here with Deepak Adhikari aka Dev, TMC MP of Ghatal. A social media influencer whose video highlighted how women are unsafe in Bengal has suddenly been accused of assaulting a female friend. No one knows when this alleged incident occurred. No one knows why the so-called victim never spoke earlier. No facts are in the public domain. Yet, a complaint is filed, right on cue.”
He also alleged that Trinamool Congress leaders had begun attacking the influencer publicly even before the investigation was completed. “Trial by social media, powered by political vendetta,” he wrote.
“This is the TMC’s model of governance: Muzzle free speech, intimidate critics, weaponise the police, destroy reputations to stay in power,” Malviya added. “This is not justice. This is political persecution. And it will end.”
Police, meanwhile, said the matter is under investigation and all allegations will be examined as per law.
