Explosions were heard in the heart of Dubai on Thursday, with at least one particularly loud blast sending small clouds of smoke rising above a nearby residential neighbourhood. The incident occurred in Downtown Dubai, the area that is home to the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall and the Dubai Fountain, according to an AFP report. Authorities have not yet confirmed what caused the blasts.
What Happened
Multiple explosions were reported in one of the world’s most recognisable urban districts. Downtown Dubai is not just a tourist destination, it is a densely populated, heavily trafficked part of the city that sits at the centre of the UAE’s commercial and cultural identity. The Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, towers over the district. The fact that explosions were heard in this specific area has understandably set off alarm bells far beyond the UAE’s borders.
Details remain limited. Smoke was spotted above a residential area close to the blast site but the exact cause has not been officially confirmed at the time of writing.
This Is Not The First Scare This Month
Earlier on March 1, videos spread rapidly across social media appearing to show an airborne object moving toward the Burj Khalifa before an explosion occurred near it. Posts claimed a drone had been intercepted close to the tower. However none of those videos or claims were officially verified and authorities did not confirm the incident at the time.
Drones Near The Airport, A Ship Hit Off The Coast
The Downtown Dubai explosions are the latest in a string of security incidents hitting the UAE in rapid succession. Just a day earlier on Wednesday two drones came down near Dubai International Airport — the world’s busiest international airport and the main hub for Emirates airline. Four people were injured in that incident according to the Dubai Media Office. Despite the injuries flights continued operating without disruption.
Around the same time strikes were reported on a container ship off the UAE coast near the outskirts of Dubai. A separate drone attack also hit the Port of Salalah in Oman. Taken together these incidents point to a deliberate and widening campaign targeting Gulf energy infrastructure and shipping routes.
How It All Started
The current wave of attacks traces back to February 28 when the United States and Israel launched a surprise strike on Iran. The attack killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, a development that sent shockwaves across the entire region and triggered an immediate and sustained retaliatory response from Tehran.
Since then Iran has been systematically targeting Gulf states, striking energy infrastructure, shipping lanes and now apparently urban centres. Attacks have been reported across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan in the weeks since.
