External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar will pay an official visit to Bhutan from September 16-17, aimed at further strengthening the close ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
During the visit, Jaishankar is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Bhutanese Foreign Affairs and External Trade Minister Lyonpo D.N. Dhungyel and call on Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
“The visit is in keeping with the tradition of regular high-level exchanges between India and Bhutan, and to further strengthen the existing close ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries,” the MEA said.
India and Bhutan have continued to cooperate on development projects at the community level. In August, the Indian Embassy in Bhutan said that three High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDP) in Panbang, Zhemgang, were inaugurated.
India and Bhutan share close and longstanding trade relations, with India being Bhutan’s largest trading partner, accounting for nearly 80% of Bhutan’s total trade. Bilateral trade between the two countries exceeded $1.9 billion in FY 2024–25, registering a growth of over 46% compared to the previous financial year.
