Chennai Weather: Residents in Chennai are expected to witness light to moderate rain on Saturday (January 24), with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for rain. Several other parts of Tamil Nadu, including Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, Karaikal area are also expected to see rainfall today.
In a post on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, the IMD said, “Light to Moderate Rain is likely at isolated places over Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, Karaikal area”.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), rain that began in isolated coastal areas on Friday is expected to spread to interior districts over the weekend. Weather officials said these wet conditions will continue until January 26, bringing light to moderate rainfall to many parts of Tamil Nadu. After this, dry weather is likely to return from January 27.
The RMC also confirmed that the Northeast Monsoon has withdrawn from Tamil Nadu. However, another weather system is now influencing the State, reported The Hindu.
V.R. Durai, Director of the Area Cyclone Warning Centre at the RMC, said an easterly wave – a fast-moving weather disturbance travelling from east to west – is passing over Tamil Nadu. This system is expected to cause rainfall across several regions, the media report added.
Due to the speed of this weather system, the RMC has updated its rainfall forecast for Sunday, indicating a higher chance of rain in more areas than earlier predicted. Authorities have advised residents to stay alert to local weather updates, especially in districts that may receive moderate rainfall.
