As Republic Day approaches, Chennai has put in place an extensive five-tier security arrangement, with nearly 7,500 police personnel deployed across the city for January 26 celebrations. The heightened security aims to ensure public safety, regulate traffic movement, and prevent any untoward incidents during the high-profile national event, as large crowds and official programmes are expected across key locations.

7,500 Police Personnel, Five-Tier Security

The Greater Chennai Police have initiated a multi-layered security protocol that commenced on January 18 and will be in effect until January 30. This security framework will escalate to a seven-tier system from January 24 to January 26, particularly in areas expected to attract large crowds.

Key locations, including Chennai Airport, will see all incoming vehicles subjected to thorough inspections, supported by sniffer dogs and bomb disposal squads to swiftly identify any potential threats. Moreover, armed police will maintain a continuous presence across the airport and its vicinity.

Traffic Diversions in Chennai

To accommodate rehearsals for the Republic Day celebrations, traffic diversions have been announced along Kamarajar Salai on January 19, 21, and 23. The following arrangements are in place:

  • Kamarajar Salai Closure: This route will be closed to all vehicular traffic from 6:00 AM until the conclusion of each rehearsal, which is tentatively expected by 9:30 AM.
  • Traffic Redirection: Vehicles from Adyar heading to Parry’s Corner will be redirected at various points, including Greenways Point and the Gandhi Statue.
  • Public Transport Adjustments: MTC buses and other public transport services will also face diversions as traffic management strategies are implemented to reduce congestion.

Security Tightened at Chennai Airport

Chennai Airport has heightened its security measures, which will remain in place until January 30. Enhanced checks include:

  • All vehicles entering the airport are subject to inspections, with armed police overseeing security.
  • Special attention is given to the multi-level parking area and terminal buildings, where commando units will conduct intensive checks.
  • Passengers are advised to arrive well in advance of their flights, with domestic travellers encouraged to arrive at least 1.5 hours before departure and international passengers 3.5 hours prior.

Anti-Sabotage Checks At Railway Stations, Bus Terminals

The deployment of police personnel extends to major public gathering points, including railway stations and commercial areas. Anti-sabotage checks will be conducted at key locations such as Chennai Central and Egmore railway stations, as well as bus termini like Koyambedu. Additionally, ‘Red Zones’ will be established where the operation of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) and drones will be strictly prohibited during the celebrations.
