Cabinet approves Ahmedabad Metro extension from GIFT City to Shahpur

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved the extension of the existing North–South corridor of the Ahmedabad Metro from GIFT City to Shahpur.

According to an official statement, the proposed extension will be 3.33 kilometres long and will include three elevated stations. The project is expected to be completed in about four years at an estimated cost of ₹1,067.35 crore.

The extension is projected to benefit around 23,702 passengers by 2029, with daily ridership expected to rise to approximately 58,059 passengers by 2041.

The corridor is expected to strengthen connectivity between Ahmedabad and the GIFT region, directly benefiting major multinational companies, educational institutions, and commercial centres located along the route. It will also cater to the daily travel needs of commuters for business, employment, and education, significantly enhancing network integration and passenger convenience.

The project is expected to generate about 1,000 jobs during the construction phase. In the post-construction phase, around 250 people will be employed for operations and maintenance. In addition, the project is likely to create substantial indirect employment through associated economic activities.

The extension will be implemented by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC), a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat.

At present, the Gujarat Metro network spans 68.28 kilometres under Phase-I and Phase-II of the Ahmedabad Metro project, with a total of 53 stations. Phase-I, comprising the APMC to Motera Stadium North–South Corridor and Thaltej Gam to Vastral Gam East–West Corridor, has been operational since September 2022. Phase-II, covering the Motera Stadium to Mahatma Mandir and GNLU to GIFT City, became operational in January 2026.

The average daily ridership on the Ahmedabad Metro network is currently around 1.6 lakh passengers.
