BRICS Environment Ministers unveil four compendiums on sustainable environmental practices

Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav, along with heads of delegations from BRICS member countries, on Tuesday unveiled four knowledge compendiums prepared by the BRICS Environment Working Group at the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting held in New Delhi under India’s BRICS 2026 Chairship.

“Reflecting the spirit of collaboration and mutual learning, under the #IndiaBRICSChairship, launched the Compendiums of the Environment Working Group during the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting.
The compendiums present a rich compilation of experiences, innovative approaches, traditional knowledge and shared experiences from BRICS Member Countries. @BRICSIndia,” said Bhupender Yadav in a post on X.

In a separate post, the Minister said: “Addressed the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting, welcoming Ministers and Delegates and reaffirming the importance of aligning policy, technology and public participation towards building a sustainable planet following a ‘humanity first’ approach”.

The four compendiums unveiled at the meeting are: Compendium on National Experiences, Leading Practices & Success Stories on Promoting Sustainable Lifestyles; Compendium on Best Practices and Innovative Approaches for Integrated Fire Management; Compendium on Integrated Landscape-Based Greening Approaches; and Compendium on Extended Producer Responsibility Frameworks and Leading Circular Economy Practices.

These compendiums bring together leading practices, national experiences, innovative solutions and local knowledge systems from BRICS member countries, highlighting the collective efforts of the grouping towards sustainable development and environmental protection.

The knowledge products are the outcome of constructive and meaningful deliberations undertaken by the BRICS Environment Working Group.

Tuesday’s meeting was preceded by a Senior Officers’ Meeting of the BRICS Environment Working Group and the Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development held at Bharat Mandapam on Monday. Officials from the BRICS member countries, including Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates, participated in the meeting, which was chaired by Tanmay Kumar, Secretary, MoEFCC.

During India’s chairship, the Environment Working Group and the Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development have focused their cooperation on four interconnected areas – promoting sustainable lifestyles; afforestation, forest fire management and disaster resilience; circular economy; and adaptation.

The priorities reflect the common environmental challenges faced by BRICS countries and the need for coordinated responses, officials said. The meeting emphasised that climate resilience, ecosystem restoration, resource efficiency and sustainable development are closely interconnected and require integrated approaches rather than isolated interventions.
