Beef Instead of Mutton? Kolkata Actor’s Viral Video Leads to Waiter’s Arrest at Popular Bar-Cum-Restaurant

Kolkata: A late-night meal at one of Kolkata’s most iconic restaurants has snowballed into a police case, a viral controversy and a political slugfest. A waiter at the popular Park Street bar-cum-restaurant Olypub has been arrested after an actor and YouTuber accused the establishment of serving him beef instead of mutton, allegedly without disclosure.

What Allegedly Happened at Park Street

The incident dates back to Friday night, when actor and social media influencer Sayak Chakraborty visited Olypub with two friends. According to the complaint, the group ordered mutton steak but were served beef instead. Sayak has alleged that the nature of the dish was never explained to them at the time of serving and that the food was placed on the table without any clarification.

Believing the dish to be mutton, the group began eating it. The confusion came to light only when another plate was brought to the table later. Sayak claims restaurant staff then told them that the earlier serving had been beef, while the newly served dish was mutton.

Viral Video Fuels Outrage

The episode gained traction after a video shot at the restaurant surfaced online. In the clip, Sayak is heard narrating the sequence of events and confronting the waiter.

“Right now we are at a very big restaurant in Park Street. We had ordered mutton steak. But we were served beef steak… We thought it was mutton steak. We ate it,” he says in the video.

He further adds that the staff later admitted that one dish was beef and the other mutton.

The video also captures an exchange where Sayak questions how mutton could have been “misheard” as beef, pointing out that the group had already consumed the food. During the heated confrontation, Sayak is heard invoking his religious identity, saying, “Do you know I’m a Brahmin? You served me beef when I asked for mutton!”

Following the incident, Sayak left the restaurant and filed a complaint at Park Street Police Station later that night. Acting on the complaint, Kolkata Police registered a case and arrested one restaurant employee on Saturday.

Confirming the arrest, a senior police officer said: “One employee of a popular restaurant/bar at Kolkata’s Park Street has been arrested on charges of serving beef instead of goat meat to a YouTuber after he lodged a complaint. A case has been registered, and the investigation is ongoing.”

Police officials said a preliminary inquiry has been conducted, and investigators are now examining whether the incident was due to negligence, miscommunication or was deliberate. The role of other staff members and the restaurant management is also under scrutiny.

Political Reactions Add Heat

The controversy intensified after the video was reposted by BJP leader and lawyer Tarunjyoti Tewari, amplifying its reach online. The BJP strongly criticised the restaurant over the alleged incident.

BJP leader Keya Ghosh said in a social media post: “A well-known blogger, actor, and his friends went to Olypub and ordered mutton steak. But they were served beef steak instead. The waiter later returned with mutton steak, saying it was a mistake. Even the manager tried to pass it off as an error, with a smile.”

She added: “Why are Hindus made a soft target? Imagine the outrage if it were some other kind of meat served to some other community.”

While the video originally uploaded by Sayak was later deleted, it had already spread widely across platforms by then. With the police probe underway, authorities say clarity will emerge once statements are recorded and evidence examined.
