Bengal Teacher Opens Fire at Children: A primary school teacher has been arrested for allegedly opening fire from his air gun on a group of children who were playing outside his residence in the Banipur area under the jurisdiction of the Raghunathganj police station in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. According to police sources, the accused has been identified as Samir Kumar Mondal, a teacher at Omorpur Primary School. The incident reportedly occurred when a group of 10 to 12 children were playing in a vacant field near Mondal’s house, as they did on most days.
Local residents claimed that the children’s ball would occasionally land inside the teacher’s property while they were playing. Mondal had allegedly warned them earlier not to play in the field for this reason. On the day of the incident, when the ball once again struck the door of his house, he allegedly became enraged and fired multiple rounds from what witnesses described as a bird-hunting gun.
During the chaos, one child was struck in the hand by a bullet while attempting to flee. The injured child was immediately rescued and taken to Jangipur Subdivisional Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
The child’s father, Biswajit Saha, alleged that Mondal fired four to five rounds toward the children. “The children were playing as usual when the ball hit his door. Suddenly, he fired at them. As they tried to run, my son was hit in the hand,” Saha said.
Following the information, a team of Raghunathganj Police Station arrived at the scene and took the accused into custody from his house. They also recovered the firearm from his home. However, authorities are determining the exact type of weapon used, with preliminary assessments suggesting it may have been a modern air gun.
‘Only to Scare Him, Did Not Mean Hurt Them’
Responding to the accusations, the accused claimed that he had fired the shot to scare the children away. He said he did not intend to injure anyone. The incident has sparked outrage and tension in the locality. Police officials stated that a detailed investigation is underway and appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings.
