Universal Music India has announced an exclusive global partnership with singer-composer Anirudh Ravichander’s newly launched independent label, Albuquerque Records. This collaboration marks a significant move in expanding non-film music, especially in pop and hip-hop, from South India to a global audience.
Under this agreement, Universal Music India will exclusively partner with Albuquerque Records to release future non-film tracks by Anirudh Ravichander, along with music from new artists signed under his label. The first release under Albuquerque Records is expected to drop in early April, featuring Anirudh himself.
This partnership is seen as a strategic step to strengthen Universal Music India’s growing footprint in independent music, particularly in genres like pop and hip-hop that are gaining massive traction in the South Indian market. Over time, Albuquerque Records is also expected to become a platform for emerging artists, helping them reach wider global audiences.
Anirudh Ravichander, who debuted in 2012 with the viral hit Why This Kolaveri Di, has built an extraordinary career over the past decade. With over 13 billion audio streams and more than 770 tracks, he is currently one of the most streamed South Indian artists on Spotify. His popular chartbusters include Hukum, Vaathi Coming, Arabic Kuthu, and several other global hits.
Speaking about the collaboration, Devraj Sanyal, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music India, described Anirudh as a bold and original force representing the future of Indian music. He emphasized that the partnership reflects the company’s vision to support transformative talent and take Indian music to global audiences.
Anirudh Ravichander said Albuquerque Records was created as an artist-driven label focused on nurturing independent talent and amplifying their voices worldwide. He added that Universal Music India, with its strong leadership in pop and hip-hop, was a natural partner for this vision.
Sanujeet Bhujabal, Managing Director of Universal Music India, highlighted Anirudh’s influence beyond film music and noted that this partnership would create a new creative space for emerging independent artists in India’s evolving music landscape.
Universal Music India, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group, continues to play a key role in shaping India’s non-film music ecosystem. With strong presence across multiple regional markets and genres, this collaboration with Anirudh Ravichander is expected to further boost the global reach of Indian independent music.
