After a year-long gap, Bengaluru is set to reintroduce vehicle towing from “No Parking” zones to ease traffic in the city. This initiative aims to alleviate traffic congestion, which has been exacerbated by increased vehicle numbers and haphazard parking practices. The Bengaluru Traffic Police in collaboration with the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), have announced the return of the towing system and higher fines on drivers parking their vehicles in “no-parking” zones.
Towing Charges and Fines Explained
The recent amendment to the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024, has led to the establishment of new towing charges. Vehicle owners will face a fine of Rs 500 for parking in restricted areas.
Additionally, towing fees have been set at Rs 650 for two-wheelers and Rs 1,000 for cars. These charges are separate from the fines outlined in the Karnataka Motor Vehicles Act, highlighting the financial implications for those who violate parking regulations.
Trial Run to Begin Soon
A trial run of the towing operations is set to commence within the next two days, focusing initially on high-traffic areas such as MG Road and the vicinity of Vidhana Soudha. The Bengaluru Traffic Police, in collaboration with the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), will oversee these operations.
The GBA has already deployed three towing vehicles, with plans to introduce more in subsequent phases across the city.
Under the new system, five city corporations will procure two to three towing vehicles each. These vehicles will be handed over to the traffic police, who will then engage private contractors for towing services. The corporations will provide a fixed monthly payment to these contractors, while all towing charges collected will go to the respective corporation.

The resumption of towing services is part of a broader strategy to tackle the Bengaluru parking issue, with the authorities hoping that stricter enforcement of parking regulations will lead to improved traffic flow and reduced congestion in the city.
