March 18 — The Moon Will Not Be Visible
The International Astronomical Centre has confirmed that sighting the Shawwal crescent on the evening of March 18 is simply not possible this year. The moon will set before the sun does that evening. Nobody anywhere will be able to spot it regardless of weather or location.
So March 18 is off the table entirely. The real watch begins the following evening.
Saudi Arabia — Moon Expected March 19
The Gulf countries look for the moon before India does. This year the crescent is expected to be visible in Saudi Arabia on the evening of March 19 at around 6:25 PM local time.
If sighted that evening, Eid in Saudi Arabia and across most Gulf nations will fall on Friday, March 20.
As always, the official announcement will only come after the moon is actually spotted and confirmed by the relevant religious authorities. No prediction replaces that moment.
India — Chand Raat on March 19, Eid on March 21
In India the moon sighting picture looks like this — Chand Raat is expected on the evening of Thursday, March 19. The crescent is anticipated to be visible from India at around 6:45 PM IST, just after sunset. Weather conditions and cloud cover in different parts of the country will affect local visibility.
If the moon is sighted on March 19 evening then Eid in India falls on March 21, Saturday.
Moon sighting committees and religious authorities across the country will make the formal announcement once the crescent is confirmed. Until that happens, March 21 remains the most likely date for Eid ul-Fitr 2026 in India.
