India Post next day delivery: In an effort to provide faster and more reliable parcel and document delivery across key cities, the Department of Posts today launched a new premium delivery offering.
Postal department launches premium services
The Department of Posts on Tuesday rolled out three premium services, with 24-hour and 48-hour delivery guarantees for urgent and time-sensitive consignments.
The services — 24 Speed Post, 24 Speed Post Parcel, and 48 Speed Post — were launched by Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.
Initially, these services are being rolled out in six cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. The department will utilise dedicated processing and priority air transport to adhere to delivery timelines.
Features
The features include SMS alerts for end-to-end tracking, free pickup for bulk bookings, OTP-based delivery, API integration and centralized billing, BNPL facility for business customers, and a money-back guarantee in cases of delay.
With the updates in features, India Post aims to increase transparency from the consignment’s pick up to its delivery, by integrating features like OTP authentication and timely alerts.
The notification came through the ‘Post Office (Second Amendment) Regulations, 2026’ by the Ministry of Communications, Department of Posts.
The service is applicable to weight and size conditions of the consignment, keeping in mind contents allowed within the parcel.
Postal department delivered first-ever ONDC online order
In January, PTI reported that the postal department kicked off handling shipments as a logistics service provider for orders placed on the ONDC platform and delivered the first parcel.
The postal department, which operates services under the India Post brand name, received the first order booked at Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) on January 13, 2026, by UdyamWell — an ONDC-enabled initiative that focuses on supporting Indian entrepreneurs by offering comprehensive services to artisans, farmers, and other rural entrepreneurs, the report added.
“Department of Posts achieved a significant milestone with the successful booking of its first online order through the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) on January 13, 2026, acting in the capacity of a Logistics Service Provider (LSP). The consignment was successfully delivered today on January 15, 2026,” according to the postal department’s statement as cited by PTI.
Last year, Scindia said that the government has been undertaking a business process reengineering exercise for India Post to make it more digital oriented with improved service delivery.
Back then, the minister told the Parliament that around 1.64 lakh post offices are spread across the country and the Modi government has worked to expand the postal network in the last 11 years.
