Veteran NFL cornerback Darius Slay officially retired on Monday, closing the book on an impressive 13-year journey in professional football. The 35-year-old made the announcement via a heartfelt statement on social media, reflecting on his gratitude for the game and excitement for what’s next.

“This game put me in a position to take care of my family and loved ones and I’m forever grateful. It’s hard to say goodbye, but God has a new chapter for me and I’m ready to turn the page and start my new journey,” Slay wrote.
Known as “Big Play Slay” for his knack for game-changing moments, the cornerback leaves behind a legacy of elite coverage skills and consistent production across multiple teams.
A journey from Detroit Lions to Super Bowl glory
Darius Slay began his NFL career with the Detroit Lions, who selected him in the second round (36th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Mississippi State. He quickly established himself as a shutdown defender, earning his first Pro Bowl nod in 2016 and reaching first-team All-Pro honours in 2017.
After seven seasons in Detroit, Slay joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 2019, where he enjoyed some of his finest years. His tenure peaked in 2024 when he helped the Eagles capture a Super Bowl title, capping a five-year run with the franchise.
Released by Philadelphia the following offseason, Darius Slay signed a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He appeared in 10 games last season, starting nine, and contributed three passes defensed, one fumble recovery, and 36 total tackles.
In December, the Steelers released him, and the Buffalo Bills claimed him off waivers.
