LPG Gas Crisis India 12 March: Every Indian household has a story of the “gas nahin hai” or the growing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder shortage. The disruptions pertain to the ongoing West Asia war that has paralysed India’s kitchens, straining global energy supply chains and slowing down fuel shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil and gas transit routes.
The gridlock has triggered oil concerns and reports on the LPG shortage grappling major Indian cities. Long queues are being witnessed at LPG distribution points and petrol pumps as households and businesses rush to secure cooking gas refills.
Govt assures adequate LPG supplies amid panic buying
Amid panic buying across India, the government has urged consumers not to rush-book LPG cylinders.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on Wednesday urged citizens not to rush to book LPG cylinders, saying normal deliveries continue despite reports of panic booking.
As a temporary demand management measure, the minimum gap between bookings has been increased from 21 days to 25 days.
Govt approves Rs 30K crore for LPG under-recoveries
A Rs 30,000 crore compensation package has been approved for oil marketing companies to cover under-recoveries. Domestic LPG production has increased by 25 per cent, with all output being directed toward household consumers. For non-domestic use, priority is being given to essential sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions.

Government sources to ET Now
Government sources told ET Now that India will not release its strategic oil reserves at the call of G7 countries, even as the group weighs the possibility of releasing reserves to stabilise global markets.
Sources also said petrol and diesel prices in India are unlikely to be hiked even if crude oil rises to $120 per barrel, adding that the country currently has sufficient crude stock.
Sources said ship movement through the Strait of Hormuz has reduced to three from around 138 daily. Moreover, they said India is not part of the ongoing conflict and will protect the rights of its consumers. Sources added that industrial use of LPG has been restricted and the government is exploring options to secure additional LPG supplies from Australia, Canada and the UAE.
Sources also said a 25-day waiting period for booking a second LPG cylinder has been imposed to discourage hoarding. They declined to comment on any policy decision related to imposing a windfall gains tax.
They further stated that India has sufficient aviation turbine fuel (ATF) to meet domestic requirements and that efforts are being made to protect the interests of CNG and PNG consumers. Domestic prioritisation measures are also being implemented to safeguard domestic consumers.
