Bihar politics: Who is Nishant Kumar? Bihar CM Nitish Kumar's son enters politics – Career and early life

bihar politics: who is nishant kumar? bihar cm nitish kumar's son enters politics - career and early life

Bihar politics: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has agreed to allow his son, Nishant Kumar, to enter active politics, marking a major shift in the state’s political landscape. The decision was finalised by senior leaders of the ruling Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)), who said an official announcement would be made soon. Meanwhile, Nitish Kumar is likely to file a nomination for Rajya Sabha on Thursday. According to ET, the BJP may appoint a new chief minister to lead the state government after Kumar moves to the upper house.

Nomination filing for the five Rajya Sabha seats in the state will close on Thursday. The BJP has named two of its candidates, including National General Secretary Nitin Naveen, and confirmed a second consecutive term for junior NDA ally Upendra Kushwaha.

The reports also suggested that as part of a deal, Kumar might consider the post of Deputy CM for his son.

Decision finalised, role to be announced

State minister Sharwon Kumar told reporters that the party has decided that “Nishant Kumar will join active politics” and will be given a “bigger responsibility” within the JD(U). Party workers have been seeking his political entry for years, and the upcoming formal announcement is expected in the next few days, around the festival of Holi.

“On the eve of Holi, I have some good news to share with the people of Bihar. It has been some time since there have been demands, from within the JD(U) as well as from among the state’s youth, that Nishant, the son of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, join politics. Decks have been cleared for that and a formal announcement will be made in a day or two,” Shrawon Kumar told news agency PTI.

Earlier, when asked whether Nishant could be nominated for a seat in the Rajya Sabha, the minister said, “Anything can happen”, leaving room for speculation about his first official role ahead of the March Rajya Sabha elections.

Who is Nishant Kumar?

Unlike many political scions, Nishant had so far kept a low public profile. According to senior party leaders, he holds a BTech degree.

Until now, Nishant has largely avoided public political life, staying away from electoral politics while still observing political developments closely. Party insiders say the timing is now seen as right to bring him into the JD(U) fold as a part of the party’s future leadership plans.

The decision has received support from within the JD(U) and from alliance partners such as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with leaders welcoming a new generation entering politics. They called his entry a positive step that could energise the party’s base.

Is this a political turning point in Bihar politics?

Nishant’s entry comes at a time when the JD(U) is preparing for crucial battles in the Rajya Sabha elections, and his induction could shape future leadership dynamics within the party. What responsibilities and roles he will play—whether legislative or organisational—will be clarified in the party’s upcoming announcement.
