Syed Ahmed Mohiuddin Abdul Qader Jilani, one of the accused in the castor seed ricin terror plot, was assaulted by three prison inmates in Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Central Jail on Tuesday.
The incident happened a day after Jilani, along with two other co-accused, was transferred to the Central Jail.
As per officials, the three prison inmates, one of whom was identified as Nilesh Sharma of Amraiwadi, attacked Jilani in a show of “patriotism”.
The officials say that Jilani was punched in his face by Sharma and two other unidentified prisoners. He suffered injuries to his eyes and nose.
A TOI report quoted a senior jail official as saying that Jilani was rescued by other inmates, who intervened to pull him away. The official said that Jilani was treated at the jail dispensary soon after.
The official also said that Jilani failed to recognise his attackers later.
Jilani was arrested last week by the Gujarat ATS for allegedly plotting terror attacks using ricin, a highly lethal chemical extracted from castor seeds.
