The United States Department of State has urged American citizens to “depart now” from more than a dozen countries across the Middle East, citing escalating security threats as hostilities between Israel and Iran intensify.
In a statement, Assistant Secretary Mora Namdar said Americans should leave using available commercial transportation options. Those unable to secure travel arrangements were advised to contact emergency consular services or enrol in the Smart Traveller program to receive updates from the nearest US embassy or consulate.
The advisory applies to U.S. citizens in the following countries and territories:
- Bahrain
- Egypt
- Iran
- Iraq
- Israel, the West Bank and Gaza
- Jordan
- Kuwait
- Lebanon
- Oman
- Qatar
- Saudi Arabia
- Syria
- The United Arab Emirates
- Yemen
The department also noted that assistance is available for Americans who require help coordinating their departure. US citizens seeking support in arranging travel can contact the State Department 24 hours a day at +1-202-501-4444 from overseas, or +1-888-407-4747 from within the United States and Canada.
Military campaign could extend weeks
The advisory follows remarks by US President Donald Trump, who said military operations targeting Iran could continue for “four to five weeks” or longer, The Times of India reported.
The United States and Israel have carried out sustained strikes against Iranian military infrastructure and facilities linked to its nuclear programme. In response, Tehran and allied groups have launched missiles and drones aimed at Israel and several Gulf nations.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters that further action is expected. “The hardest hits are yet to come,” he said, describing the next phase of operations as potentially “even more punishing on Iran.”
According to the White House, the objectives of the campaign include eliminating Iran’s missile capabilities, weakening its naval forces and preventing the country from acquiring nuclear weapons, the TOI report said.
Conflict spreads across the region
Saudi Arabia reported that drones targeted its Ras Tanura oil refinery, though officials said air defence systems intercepted the attack. Qatar stated that its air force shot down two Iranian aircraft. Meanwhile, multiple vessels have been struck in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil shipments.
Rising casualties
The violence has resulted in significant loss of life on multiple sides.
Iranian authorities report that hundreds have been killed in US and Israeli airstrikes. In Israel, missile attacks have claimed civilian lives, including three siblings whose funeral was held in Jerusalem.
The US military has confirmed that six American service members have died since operations began.
