Citing continued assessment of the evolving security situation in the Middle East following the US and Israel’s strikes against Iran, Air India announced the cancellation of several long-haul international flights scheduled for March 1.
The airline has cancelled 28 flights connecting various cities in Europe, the US and Canada for March 1 due to the evolving situation in the Middle East. Among the flights impacted are those to some major destinations, including London, Chicago, Toronto, New York and Paris. The decision expands earlier suspensions that primarily affected Gulf routes.
In a post from its X account, the Air India spokesperson said, “As part of our continuing assessment of the evolving situation in the Middle East, in the interest of the safety and security of our guests and staff, Air India has cancelled the following flights scheduled on March 1, 2026,” an Air India spokesperson said.

The airline further said it sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused to the valued guests by these disruptions and is notifying them of cancellations and supporting them with alternative options to minimise the inconvenience.
The airline also said it will continue to monitor developments closely and issue updates based on ongoing risk assessments.
The cancellations of the flights come amid heightened geopolitical tensions following military strikes involving Israel and the United States targeting Iranian sites. Iran has also carried out strikes in the region, apparently targeting US military baes. The escalation has led to temporary airspace closures in parts of West Asia, forcing airlines worldwide to reassess routes that traditionally pass through or near affected corridors.
Earlier, Air India Express announced the extension of its westbound international flight suspensions to the Gulf region until March 1, 2026. The airline is coordinating with authorities and will resume services when conditions permit. Guests with bookings affected by this suspension are offered options to reschedule without fees or receive a full refund.
An Air India Express spokesperson said, “Air India Express has extended the suspension of its westbound international flights until 23:59 hours on March 01, 2026, in view of the ongoing situation in parts of the Gulf Region. We are working closely with the relevant authorities and will resume services as soon as conditions allow. However, guests who booked travel to or from the Gulf region up to 28th February 2026, for journeys scheduled until 5th March 2026, may reschedule their travel to a future date without any date-change fees, or cancel their bookings for a full refund to their original mode of payment. Guests can conveniently manage their bookings at https://www.airindiaexpress.com/manage-booking or through Tia, our AI-powered chat assistant available on WhatsApp.”
“In view of the current situation in the Middle East, Air India has cancelled all flights to destinations in the region until 2359 hours on 1 March. We are closely monitoring developments and remain in continuous coordination with the relevant authorities. The safety and security of our passengers, crew and aircraft remain our highest priority.
We will continue to assess the situation and take appropriate operational decisions as necessary. Affected passengers are being informed, and our teams are providing all required assistance to our passengers, including rebooking and refunds. You are requested to check your flight status here https://airindia.com/in/en/manage/flight-status.html for the latest updates,” said Air India in another post on X.
“For more information related to this please connect with our 24×7 Call Centre at +91 1169329333, +91 1169329999 or visit our website at http://airindia.com. Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves. Thank you for your patience and understanding,” it added.
Similarly, IndiGo announced suspension of its flight operations to and from the Middle East and select international sectors until March 1, 2026. “Travel Advisory. In view of the evolving situation around Iran and the Middle East, our flight operations to and from the Middle East and other select international sectors have been suspended until 1st March 2026,” the airline posted.
IndiGo said the move was a proactive safety measure and acknowledged the inconvenience caused to passengers. “In an endeavour to provide support to our customers, we are extending full flexibility and waivers for travel to/from the Middle East and select International sectors until 7th March 2026, applicable to bookings made on or before 28th February 2026. Customers may opt for a full refund or reschedule at no additional cost,” the airline wrote on X.

Many countries close their airspaces, travellers stranded at airports
Meanwhile, the US and Israel’s attack on Iran disrupted flights across the Middle East and beyond, as regional airspaces began closing and tens of thousands of travellers across the globe were stranded.
Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar closed their airspace on Saturday. Airspace in southern Syria was also closed, as were skies above Iran, Iraq, Kuwait and Bahrain and Oman’s Muscat International Airport, according to flight tracking website FlightRadar24.
Planes that were en route to cities like Tel Aviv and Dubai early Saturday were diverted or returned to where they took off from.
Dubai International Airport alone – the world’s busiest airport for international flights – reported more than 700 inbound and outbound flights cancelled. The airport’s operator said flights were halted indefinitely at Dubai International and Dubai World Central-Al Maktoum International Airport on the Gulf city’s outskirts.
The situation is changing quickly and airlines urged passengers to check their flight status online before heading to the airport. Some airlines were issuing waivers to affected travellers, meaning fliers can rebook their flight plans without paying extra fees or higher fares.
Jonathan Escott and his fiancée had arrived at the airport in Newcastle, England, only to find out that his direct flight to Dubai on Emirates airline was cancelled, leaving everyone on the flight stuck there.
Escott left to go back to where he was staying with family, about an hour from the airport, but has no idea when he may be able to travel.
“No one knows,” Escott said. “No one really knows what’s going on with the conflict, really. Not Emirates, Emirates don’t have a clue. No one has a clue.”
The airspace closures were likely to have significant ripple effects for Dubai-based Emirates and many other airlines that fly in and out of the Middle East.
Numerous airlines have cancelled international flights to Dubai through the weekend, as India’s civil aviation agency designated much of the Middle East – including skies above Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon – as a high-security risk zone at all altitudes.
Turkish Airlines said flights to Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran and Jordan were suspended until Monday and flights to Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Oman were suspended. The airline said additional cancellations may be announced.
US-based Delta Airlines and United Airlines suspended flights to Tel Aviv at least through the weekend, while Dutch airline KLM had already announced earlier in the week that it was suspending flights to and from Tel Aviv.
Airlines including Lufthansa, Air France, Transavia, Qatar Airways, and Pegasus have canceled all flights to Lebanon.
Virgin Atlantic said it would avoid flying over Iraq, meaning flights to and from India, the Maldives and Riyadh could take slightly longer. The airline already was not flying over Iran and said all flights would carry appropriate fuel in case they need to reroute on short notice.
British Airways said flights to Tel Aviv and Bahrain will be suspended until next week, and flights to Amman, Jordan, will be cancelled Saturday.
With uncertainty still looming over the duration of the airspace closures, stranded passengers remain hopeful for swift diplomatic and logistical coordination to ensure their safe return home.
Delhi airport authorities on Saturday morning issued a passenger advisory cautioning travellers about possible delays and schedule changes on westbound international flights due to the evolving political situation in the Middle East.
In the advisory released at 08:00 hrs, passengers were advised to check with their respective airlines for the latest flight status before leaving for the airport. Officials stressed that flight operations could be impacted as airlines reassess routes and schedules in view of regional developments.
Travellers have also been urged to monitor real-time updates through the airport’s official website, www.newdelhiairport.in, for verified information.
Airport authorities expressed appreciation for passengers’ patience and cooperation during the period of uncertainty and requested that travellers rely only on official communication channels for accurate and updated information.
