Surat: In a rare stroke of luck, a 57-year-old man escaped death after slipping out of his 10th-floor flat and getting stuck in a metal grill two floors below, leaving him suspended upside down for nearly an hour before being rescued on Thursday morning, officials said.
The man, identified as Nitin Adiya, was sleeping near a window of his apartment at the Times Galaxy building in the Jahangirabad area of Surat when he accidentally slipped and fell out, according to fire department officials.
What could have been a fatal fall was miraculously arrested when Adiya got lodged in a metal grill installed outside a window on the 8th floor, two levels below his flat.

Hung Upside Down for Nearly an Hour
Officials said Adiya remained suspended upside down in severe agony for about an hour, unable to free himself, as residents alerted emergency services. Dramatic videos of the tense rescue operation later surfaced on social media and quickly went viral.
After receiving an emergency call around 8 am, fire brigade teams from Jahangirpura, Palanpur and Adajan rushed to the spot and launched a coordinated rescue operation.
Using ropes and safety belts from the 10th floor, rescuers carefully secured Adiya and pulled him to safety, bringing him inside through the front window of the 8th floor, officials said.
Shifted to Hospital After Rescue
Following the successful rescue, Adiya was immediately shifted to Gurukrupa Hospital in an ambulance for medical evaluation. His condition was not immediately known, but officials said he had survived the ordeal.
Fire officials described the rescue as challenging but successful, crediting swift coordination and safety measures for preventing a tragedy.
