A Kolkata-based social media influencer has been arrested on charges of harassment, wrongful confinement and physical assault of a woman, triggering a sharp political war of words between the state ruling party TMC and the opposition BJP. The accused Shamik Adhikary, popularly known as ‘Nonsane’ on social media, was arrested by Behala Police.

According to the complaint, the 22-year-old woman alleged that she was wrongfully confined inside a flat in the Behala area, suspected to be the house of the influencer, for nearly 12 hours, between the night of February 2 and the evening of February 3. She claimed that during this period, she was physically assaulted with fists and blows, her modesty was outraged and was threatened over a personal dispute before being allowed to leave.

Depending on her complaint, police has registered a case under multiple sections of the BNS, sections 127(2), 115(2), 74, 351(2), and later added Section 64. A raid was also conducted in the Behala house but the influencer was found to be absconding.

Police sources confirmed to Times Now that the complainant underwent a medical examination at MR Bangur Hospital, where doctors reportedly found visible signs of physical injury. The medical findings have been documented and form a part of the investigation. Later on Thursday, the arrest of the absconding influencer was made from Dumdum following preliminary inquires and collection of evidence.

Political Uproar Over Assault Case

The case has snowballed into a political controversy already. The BJP IT Cell chief, Amit Malviya, over X, alleged that the influencer was being selectively targeted and claimed the arrest was politically motivated. On Friday morning, the stand was reiterated over a fresh post, questioning the timing of the arrest and accusing the state government of using police action to silence voices.

TMC hit back strongly, accusing the BJP of shielding the accused and trivialising allegations of violence against a woman. TMC leaders stated that the law must take its course and warned against politicising such a serious criminal complaint.

The police say that the investigation is underway and further action will be based on evidence and court directions. The accused is to be presented before the court today while the wait for medico examination is still on.
