After Jayalalithaa’s death, Panneerselvam was appointed as the Chief Minister with support from VK Sasikala in December 2016. However, as differences erupted in the party, on February 7, 2017, Panneerselvam in a dramatic move went to Jayalalithaa’s memorial and sat there for around 40 minutes in meditation in a late-night move. OPS later told the media that he was being forced to resign as the Chief Minister, launching a dramatic revolt against Sasikala.
