India’s Rabi crop sowing in 2025–26 has recorded a notable increase in coverage compared with the same period last year, with total area sown rising by more than 8 lakh hectares, according to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare on Monday.
As of December 19, 2025, the total Rabi crop coverage reached 580.70 lakh hectares, up from 572.59 lakh hectares at the same stage in the previous crop year, reflecting steady progress in sowing operations across the country.
The expansion was driven in part by a rise in pulses and oilseeds acreage. Coverage under pulses increased by 3.72 lakh hectares, with gram recording a significant rise of 4.89 lakh hectares against the corresponding period of 2024–25. Oilseeds area, led by rapeseed and mustard, also expanded, reaching 93.33 lakh hectares.
Among foodgrains, wheat and rice sowing areas registered year-on-year increases. Wheat coverage was higher by 1.29 lakh hectares, and rice area saw an increase of 1.83 lakh hectares compared with the same period last year.
The data also show a mixed picture for other crops. Some pulses such as lentils recorded a small decline, and certain cereals saw variation in coverage, indicating region-specific sowing trends across different states.
Agriculture officials said the progress in Rabi sowing reflects favourable weather conditions and proactive efforts by state governments and farmers to complete field operations ahead of the peak winter season. The continued expansion of Rabi acreage is crucial for strengthening foodgrain availability and supporting agricultural growth in the upcoming year.
The Ministry will continue monitoring crop progress and release further updates as sowing advances towards maturity.
