Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday addressed Pongal celebrations in the national capital, saying the harvest festival has now become a global occasion that showcases the richness of Tamil culture.
Extending greetings in Tamil, the Prime Minister said Pongal is not just a festival but a reflection of gratitude towards farmers, nature and the Sun. “Today, Pongal has become a global festival,” he remarked, adding that Tamil communities across the world celebrate it with pride and enthusiasm.
Calling Tamil culture a shared heritage of the nation, PM Modi said its civilisational depth strengthens the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat. He recalled recent programmes connected to Tamil heritage — including his visits to Gangaikonda Cholapuram, the Kashi Tamil Sangamam and Rameswaram — as experiences that reaffirmed cultural unity.
Highlighting the centrality of agriculture in Tamil life, Modi noted that farmers are regarded as “the foundation of life” and pointed to the writings in Thirukkural on farming and farmer welfare. He said farmers are vital partners in nation-building and contribute to the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, adding that the government remains committed to their empowerment.
The Prime Minister said Pongal inspires a lifestyle rooted in environmental responsibility. Stressing the need to preserve soil health, conserve water and use resources sustainably, he cited initiatives such as Mission LiFE, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam and Amrit Sarovar.
PM Modi said India is working to promote sustainable agriculture, natural farming, water management and agritech-led innovation, and urged young farmers — particularly from Tamil Nadu — to lead the shift towards eco-friendly practices. “Our goal should be that our plate remains full, our pocket remains full, and our earth remains safe,” he said.
Describing Tamil culture as one of the world’s oldest living civilisations, he said it bridges the past and future by drawing strength from heritage while embracing new possibilities. Modi added that on the occasion of Pongal, the country reflects confidence in a future that is culturally rooted and progressive.
The Prime Minister concluded by conveying greetings to Tamil communities in India and abroad, wishing prosperity and happiness to all.
