The Winter Session of Parliament began on Monday with Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally welcoming newly elected Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan to the Rajya Sabha as its Chairman.
Radhakrishnan, who previously served as Governor of Maharashtra and Jharkhand and held additional charge of Telangana and Puducherry, was elected as India’s 15th Vice President with 452 votes, defeating Opposition nominee and former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy.
Addressing the Upper House, PM Modi congratulated Radhakrishnan on assuming the Chair and said the House looked forward to his guidance during the session.
“The Winter Session is beginning today, and it is a moment of pride to welcome you. Your guidance on key matters will help the House in taking important decisions for the country,” the Prime Minister said. He expressed confidence that all MPs would maintain decorum and uphold the dignity of the Chair.
PM Modi highlighted Radhakrishnan’s long involvement in public life, noting that he came from a farming family and had devoted much of his career to social service. “Your rise from humble beginnings reflects the strength of Indian democracy,” he said.
The Prime Minister also referred to Radhakrishnan’s administrative experience, including his tenure as Coir Board chairman and his work in tribal regions while serving as a Governor, saying these experiences strengthened his credibility in public life.
The Rajya Sabha conducted its formal proceedings, while the Lok Sabha was adjourned till noon following Opposition protests over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
The Winter Session will run until December 19, with 15 sittings scheduled over 19 days.
