India on Friday reiterated its consistent support for democratic processes in Bangladesh, calling for free, fair, inclusive and participatory elections in the neighbouring country, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India remains committed to strengthening ties with the people of Bangladesh and supports peace and stability in the country.
“India stands for strengthening our ties with the people of Bangladesh. We favour peace and stability in Bangladesh and have consistently called for free, fair, inclusive and participatory elections,” Jaiswal said while outlining New Delhi’s position.
The remarks come amid close monitoring of political developments in Bangladesh ahead of the February 2026 elections. The MEA said it is watching the situation following the return of former prime minister’s son Tarique Rahman, amid concerns over the broader political and social environment.
Alongside the electoral context, India also expressed serious concern over the killing of a Hindu youth in Bangladesh, linking the issue to the wider question of minority safety and law and order in the country.
The MEA noted that independent assessments have documented over 2,900 incidents of violence against minorities during the tenure of Bangladesh’s interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, including cases of killings, arson and land grabbing.
Condemning the recent killing, Jaiswal said, “The unremitting hostility against minorities in Bangladesh is a matter of great concern. We condemn the killing of a Hindu youth and expect the perpetrators to be brought to justice.”
The Ministry’s comments follow recent incidents of mob violence against Hindu men in Bangladesh, which have renewed focus on minority security concerns.
According to local police, a 29-year-old Hindu man, Amrit Mandal, was killed on Thursday in Bangladesh’s Rajbari district. Police said he was allegedly accused of extortion by local residents, after which the situation escalated into mob violence.
Earlier, another Hindu youth, Dipu Chandra Das, a garment factory worker, was beaten to death by a mob in Mymensingh. Initial reports linked the incident to allegations of blasphemy, though later information suggested a workplace dispute as the likely trigger.
The MEA had earlier described Das’s killing as “horrendous” and urged Bangladeshi authorities to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
