Indian Railways approves Rs 295-crore Kavach 4.0 rollout across 660 Route Km in Izzatnagar Division


Indian Railways has approved the deployment of Kavach Version 4.0 across 660 route kilometres of the Izzatnagar Division of North Eastern Railway (NER) at an estimated cost of ₹295 crore.

The project has been sanctioned under the umbrella work for providing Kavach along with a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) communication backbone on the remaining sections of the Indian Railways network.

According to the Ministry of Railways, Kavach is India’s indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed to enhance railway safety by continuously monitoring train movements and helping prevent Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) incidents and train collisions.

The system can automatically apply brakes when necessary, allowing trains to operate safely at their maximum permissible speeds. It is also designed to improve operational reliability and support safer train operations during adverse weather conditions, including dense fog.

Safety infrastructure to be strengthened

The approved project will cover the balance sections of the Izzatnagar Division under North Eastern Railway. The deployment of Kavach Version 4.0 is expected to further strengthen the safety infrastructure across these identified sections.

The approval is part of Ministry’s broader effort to expand the indigenous automatic train protection system across its network and enhance operational safety through advanced signalling and communication technologies.

The integration of Kavach with an LTE communication backbone is aimed at providing a robust technological foundation for safer and more reliable train operations.
