The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday strongly advised Indian nationals to avoid travel to Iran until further notice, citing the deteriorating security situation and continuing protests in the country.
“In view of the ongoing developments in Iran, Indian nationals are once again strongly advised to avoid travel to the Islamic Republic of Iran until further notice,” the MEA said. The advisory follows an earlier warning issued by the Government of India on January 5, amid growing concerns over worsening law and order conditions.
Separately, the Indian Embassy in Tehran has advised Indian citizens currently in Iran to leave the country at the earliest. In an advisory posted on X, the Embassy said Indian nationals – including students, pilgrims, businesspersons and tourists – should depart Iran using available means of transport, including commercial flights.
“In continuation of the advisory issued by the Government of India on January 5 and in view of the evolving situation in Iran, Indian nationals who are currently in Iran are advised to leave the country by available means of transport,” the Embassy said.
The Embassy reiterated that all Indian citizens and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) should exercise due caution, avoid areas witnessing protests or demonstrations, remain in close contact with the Indian Embassy, and closely monitor local media for updates. It also urged Indian nationals to keep their travel and immigration documents, including passports and identity cards, readily accessible.
Indian citizens requiring assistance have been asked to contact the Embassy through its emergency helplines: +989128109115, +989128109109, +989128109102 and +989932179359, or via email at cons.tehran@mea.gov.in.
The Embassy further requested all Indian nationals in Iran who have not yet registered with it to do so through the MEA’s registration portal. For those unable to register due to internet disruptions in Iran, family members in India have been advised to complete the registration on their behalf.
The advisories come amid continuing unrest in Iran, where protests have entered their 20th day. What began as demonstrations against record inflation and a sharp fall in the national currency has since escalated into widespread nationwide unrest, with reports of agitation across more than 280 locations.
