It is widely believed that more than 85 per cent of a child’s cumulative brain development occurs before the age of six, making early childhood a crucial phase for healthy brain development and growth in later years.
In Gujarat’s Dahod district, several positive initiatives have been undertaken at Anganwadi centres to expose children to pre-school learning techniques and nurture their cognitive abilities.
Under these initiatives, children aged three to six years are engaged through a games-cum-class model under the “Pa Pa Pagli” project. Anganwadi workers involve children in multiple games while also helping them learn basic life skills.
At the Anganwadi centre in Jorwani village of Dahod district, a strong foundation is being laid for the young learners. Under the “Pa Pa Pagli Yojana”, a unique teaching model based on play-oriented activities has been introduced for children in the three-to-six age group.
As part of the programme, children participate in various structured activities alongside their regular learning.
The “Pa Pa Pagli :(First Steps of the Child)” project is a flagship initiative of the Gujarat government’s Women and Child Development Department, supported by UNICEF India. The programme aims to strengthen the quality of pre-school education in Anganwadi centres for children aged three to six years.
This early childhood education model in Dahod has gained considerable popularity.
Anganwadi centres, which traditionally provide nutrition and health services, are now also playing a vital role in child development by engaging children daily through interactive games and educational videos.
Dahod is considered a backward district of Gujarat with a high school dropout rate. Through this initiative, a noticeable improvement in children’s confidence and learning abilities has been observed across more than 3,000 Anganwadi centres in the district.
The combined approach of play-based activities and pre-school learning has the potential to become a model for others to emulate.
