Dharmendra Pradhan chairs third consultative committee meeting on use of AI in education

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Thursday chaired the third meeting of the Consultative Committee on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Teaching and Learning in New Delhi, underscoring the growing role of emerging technologies in transforming India’s education system.

Addressing the gathering, Pradhan said artificial intelligence has the potential to address some of the most pressing challenges in education, particularly in making quality education more inclusive, accessible and equitable. He thanked the committee members for their suggestions and insights, and reiterated the government’s commitment to making learning more student-centric and personalised, improving learning outcomes, addressing the diverse needs of students, and empowering both learners and educators.

The meeting featured a detailed presentation on school education interventions, highlighting how artificial intelligence is being systematically integrated across the school education ecosystem in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The presentation covered curriculum reforms such as the introduction of age-appropriate computational thinking and AI literacy from the foundational stage onwards, project-based learning approaches, and the formal introduction of AI as a skill subject at the secondary level.

It also showcased key national digital initiatives, including DIKSHA 2.0, e-Jaadui Pitara, Guru-Mitra, the TARA app, My Career Advisor and Vidya Samiksha Kendra. These platforms are leveraging AI to enable personalised learning, teacher support, career guidance, assessments, multilingual access and real-time monitoring of student progress.

A separate presentation focused on higher education interventions, outlining the transformative role of AI in strengthening teaching-learning processes, research, innovation and employability. Discussions covered AI-enabled curriculum updates in centrally funded institutions, the integration of skill-based and interdisciplinary courses, and the strengthening of digital and physical infrastructure to support advanced learning and research.

The presentation highlighted that these measures are aimed at building future-ready graduates, fostering innovation ecosystems within higher education institutions, and ensuring that India’s higher education system remains globally competitive while promoting inclusion.

The meeting was attended by Minister of State for Education and Development of North Eastern Region Sukanta Majumdar, Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (Independent Charge) and Education Jayant Chaudhary, members of the Consultative Committee, Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of the Department of Higher Education Dr Vineet Joshi, and senior officials of the Ministry of Education.
