Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that the approval of Delhi Metro’s Phase V(A) project will significantly expand the national capital’s metro network, improving ease of living and reducing traffic congestion.
In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister said the Cabinet’s decision to approve three new metro corridors would give a major boost to Delhi’s infrastructure and strengthen urban mobility.
Earlier in the day, the Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister, approved three new corridors under Phase V(A) of the Delhi Metro project. These include R.K. Ashram Marg to Indraprastha (9.913 km), Aerocity to Indira Gandhi Domestic Airport Terminal-1 (2.263 km) and Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj (3.9 km). The total length of the approved corridors is 16.076 km.
Under the approved plan, 13 new stations will be constructed, including 10 underground and three elevated stations, with the project scheduled for completion over a period of three years.
Announcing the Cabinet decision, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw said the total project cost is Rs 12,014.91 crore. The funding will be shared by the Government of India, the Government of Delhi and international funding agencies.
He said the Central Vista corridor will provide direct connectivity to all Kartavya Bhawans, benefiting around 60,000 office-goers and nearly two lakh visitors daily. The project is also expected to reduce pollution and dependence on fossil fuels.
According to the government, the Phase V(A) expansion will add nearly 16 kilometres to the Delhi Metro network, taking the total operational length beyond 400 kilometres and further strengthening connectivity across the National Capital Region.
At present, the Delhi Metro operates 12 lines covering about 395 kilometres with 289 stations across Delhi and NCR. The network caters to an average of 65 lakh passenger journeys every day and is operated by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
