At least six people, including five women, were killed and 20 others injured after a private bus collided with a truck in Telangana’s Suryapet district in the early hours of Wednesday, police said.
The accident took place on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway near Durgapuram stage in Kodad mandal. According to preliminary information, the bus was travelling from Hyderabad towards Eluru in Andhra Pradesh via Vijayawada when it rammed into a truck from behind.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.
“Distressed to learn about the mishap in Suryapet, Telangana. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured,” the Prime Minister said in a post on X.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy also expressed shock and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families. He directed the Chief Secretary to take necessary steps to ensure the injured receive the best possible medical treatment.
Transport Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy expressed condolences to the families of the victims and directed officials to ensure quality treatment for the injured. He stressed that there should be no compromise on safety standards in private buses and driver alertness, and called for stricter monitoring to ensure compliance with road safety regulations.
Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao called for immediate ex-gratia assistance to the families of those killed and urged the government to strengthen road safety measures.
