The Department of Posts on Monday launched upgraded versions of its Dak MITRA and Dak Sewa mobile applications and inaugurated 14 renovated Post Office buildings as part of efforts to modernise postal services and strengthen last-mile delivery.
Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia and Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani launched the applications and inaugurated the renovated facilities, with the initiatives aimed at making India Post more technology-enabled, accessible and citizen-centric.
Scindia said the Department of Posts was undergoing a comprehensive transformation driven by technology, policy reforms, organisational changes and modern infrastructure. He said the upgraded Dak Sewa and Dak MITRA platforms reflected the government’s effort to make postal services easier to access and use for citizens across generations.
Pemmasani said the initiatives would combine India Post’s traditional trust and service ethos with technology, speed and convenience. He highlighted Dak MITRA as a digital tool for postal employees and Dak Sewa as a single platform giving citizens access to multiple postal services.
Dak MITRA to serve 1.4 lakh Branch Post Offices
Developed by the Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology (CEPT) under the Advanced Postal Technology platform, the upgraded Dak MITRA (Mobile Interface for Transactions & Rural Assistance) application is designed as a unified operational platform for more than 1.4 lakh Branch Post Offices.
The Android-based application enables Branch Postmasters to carry out paperless and real-time postal and financial transactions. These include mail booking, OTP-based doorstep delivery, core banking services, insurance services, Aadhaar-based biometric e-KYC, cash deposits and withdrawals, and collection of PLI/RPLI premiums at customers’ doorsteps.
The initiative is expected to strengthen the reach of digital postal and financial services, particularly in rural and remote areas.
Dak Sewa brings services to a single platform
The upgraded Dak Sewa App provides citizens with round-the-clock access to a range of postal services, including article tracking and booking, complaints, Post Office and PIN code locators and financial calculators.
The application supports 23 Indian languages through BHASHINI, allowing users to access postal services in multiple regional languages.
According to the Ministry of Communications, the digital platforms are part of its broader DoP IT 2.0 modernisation programme aimed at making India Post more efficient and technology-driven.
14 renovated post offices inaugurated
Alongside the digital rollout, the Department also stepped up efforts to modernise its physical infrastructure.
In collaboration with the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), New Delhi, the Department has developed a Design Manual focusing on functionality, accessibility, operational efficiency and improved customer experience at Post Offices.
Under a proof-of-concept initiative, 40 Post Offices across 17 States were selected for transformation. Of these, 27 have been completed, including four that were inaugurated earlier and 14 that were inaugurated on Monday.
The newly renovated Post Offices are located at Patliputra in Bihar; Vasant Kunj in Delhi; Sector-56 Gurugram in Haryana; Kakurgachi in Kolkata; Vidisha and Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh; Shillong in Meghalaya; Kandivali West in Mumbai; Shankar Nagar and Ayodhya Nagar in Nagpur; Nirala Nagar, Gomti Nagar and Indira Nagar in Lucknow; and Prayagraj.
The remaining Post Offices under the initial 40-facility programme are targeted for completion by August 31. The Department also plans to extend the modernisation programme to another 60 Post Offices during the current financial year.
The renovated facilities feature a standardised India Post identity, improved signage, citizen-focused layouts and dedicated service areas. Depending on the location, they will also offer facilities such as 24×7 services, ATMs, after-hours booking and smart parcel services.
The Ministry said the combination of upgraded digital platforms and modernised Post Office infrastructure would help strengthen last-mile delivery and improve accessibility and efficiency, while retaining India Post’s traditional role as a trusted public service institution.
