President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday extended greetings to the Indian Coast Guard on the occasion of its 50th Raising Day, hailing the force for its vital role in safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests and ensuring safety at sea.
The Indian Coast Guard, established on February 1, 1977, is a maritime law enforcement and search-and-rescue agency with jurisdiction over India’s territorial waters, including the contiguous zone and the exclusive economic zone. The force was initially proposed by the Indian Navy to provide non-military maritime services to the country.
In her message, President Murmu said that over the past five decades, the Indian Coast Guard has played a key role in protecting the coastline, securing maritime interests, and ensuring maritime safety.
“The dedication and courage of its personnel are a source of pride for the nation. I commend the Indian Coast Guard for its unwavering commitment to national security and humanitarian services,” she said. The President extended her warm greetings and felicitations to all ranks of the force and their families, wishing them continued success in the years ahead.
Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan also conveyed his greetings to the Coast Guard on its Raising Day, noting that five decades of steadfast service have earned Bharatiya Tatrakshak a respected place in India’s security framework.
He said the force’s contributions to national security, maritime safety, and environmental protection have been noteworthy, adding that it continues to strengthen its capabilities and commitment to excellence.
As the Coast Guard enters its ‘Swarnim Varsh’ (Golden Year), the Vice President expressed confidence that its vision, expertise, and collaborative spirit would further enhance India’s maritime security and global standing. He wished the force continued success, innovation, and excellence, and praised its personnel and families for their honour, courage, and dedication to the motto ‘Vayam Rakshamah’ — We Protect.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also congratulated the Indian Coast Guard and its families, highlighting its proactive role in safeguarding the coastline, preventing illegal activities, responding to natural disasters, and contributing to national security and maritime sustainability.
As the force enters its Golden Jubilee year, 2026–27, Singh said he was confident that the Coast Guard would continue to lead maritime surveillance with cutting-edge capabilities, innovation, and operational excellence.
He extended his best wishes to all personnel for their continued service in protecting India’s seas and upholding the force’s motto, ‘Vayam Rakshamah’.
