The common factor between Rajinikanth’s Coolie and Jurassic World Rebirth – NO IMAX release; release period to blame

One of the biggest Hollywood films of the year, Jurassic World Rebirth, will hit cinemas across the world on July 4. All the previous three parts since 2015 have always got a release in the IMAX screens. But fans of the franchise will be disappointed to know that they won’t get to see this movie in any IMAX theatre in the world.

A trade source told Bollywood Hungama, “Jurassic World Rebirth has got sandwiched between two other biggies – F1: The Movie and Superman. F1: The Movie has been released in IMAX and has a two-week exclusive window in the large-screen special format cinemas. From July 11, Superman will take over the IMAX shows. This leaves Jurassic World Rebirth with no option but to forgo an IMAX release.”

However, the release period will prove beneficial, especially in the USA where it releases on Wednesday, July 2, to capitalize on the Fourth of July weekend. As per Deadline, it will have a 5-day opening weekend between $115–135 million in the USA.

In August, another film will be in the same boat as Jurassic World Rebirth and it’s an Indian flick – Coolie. It brings Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj together for the first time and moreover, it also has a cameo by Aamir Khan.

Coolie arrives in cinemas on August 14, the same day as War 2. Recently, it came to light that Yash Raj Films have inked a special deal with IMAX. As per the deal, no other film can be released in IMAX in India except for the Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR starrer. It indirectly made it clear that Coolie will have to give up an IMAX release.

Past records

Normally, IMAX prefers a single film to have showcasing in their properties worldwide. There have been times when certain films, meant for IMAX, couldn’t get the go-ahead due to the clash with some other IMAX movie. Adipurush was all set to release in IMAX. But after it was postponed to June 16, 2023, it ended up clashing with The Flash, which had already taken the IMAX slots by then. Similarly, ’83 (2021) gave up on the IMAX version due to Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and The Matrix Resurrections (2021).

Recently, Interstellar (2014) was re-released in IMAX everywhere but not in India due to Pushpa 2 (2024). It got a re-release only in February 2025. The move worked as it ended up collecting a huge Rs. 30 crores. It was surprisingly the biggest Hollywood grosser in the first quarter of 2025.
