50 years of Emergency: Locked rooms, whispered protests, silent defiance; how JNU students fought censorship amid crackdown



During the 1975 Emergency, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) became a hub of resistance against Indira Gandhi’s government. Students organized underground networks, hiding activists and circulating anti-government publications. Despite police surveillance and arrests, including that of Prabir Purkayastha, they employed silent protests and maintained camaraderie.
